SXSW London Emerges as a Global Creative Hub Connecting Asia, America, and Europe

Conversation with Sam OShaughnessy, Head of Brand Partnerships at SXSW in Austin

The world-renowned cultural festival 'South by Southwest (SXSW)' is set to open new horizons in London this June. Expanding beyond Austin, Texas, SXSW has ambitious plans to establish itself not merely as a regional expansion but as a hub for the global creative industry connecting Asia, America, and Europe.

Sam O'Shaughnessy, a key team member of SXSW London, serves as the head of global partnerships. In a recent interview, he emphasized, "What we're building isn't simply a European version of SXSW Austin. We're creating a truly global platform where East meets West."

The event presents its vision under the tagline "Beautiful Collision," aiming to break down geographical and cultural boundaries and create a space where diverse industries and cultures intersect.

London's geographical advantage plays a crucial role in realizing this vision. Sam explained, "London is the perfect meeting place as an international hub with direct flights from Tokyo, Seoul, Singapore, New York, LA, and San Francisco. We're creating an environment where Asian technological innovation can meet American investment capital, where Hollywood filmmakers can discover emerging directors from Bangkok or Mumbai, and where K-pop artists can collaborate with British producers."

Special programs for Asian markets and creators are drawing particular attention. The 'Asia Innovation Spotlight' will focus on startups from major Asian cities like Seoul, Tokyo, and Singapore, while the film section will include dedicated screening blocks for Asian independent films. A stage for musicians from across Asia is also being prepared through a partnership with the BBC Asian Network.

SXSW London's strategic timing is also noteworthy. Sam stated, "For those attending CES in Las Vegas in January or SXSW Austin in March, our June timing allows for follow-up meetings and deal progression. For Asian companies looking to expand into Western markets, it provides a strategic second touchpoint in the annual calendar before fall events like Tokyo Game Show or Singapore Fintech Festival."

SXSW London offers attractive opportunities for American participants as well. Sam emphasized, "Americans gain unparalleled access to both European and Asian markets in a single trip. Instead of taking separate business trips to London, Berlin, Tokyo, and Singapore, they can meet all opportunities in one place." He added that it's "an opportunity to experience content not found in the US, such as emerging European music scenes, Asian gaming innovations, and fashion concepts not yet introduced to America."

The practical aspects of the event have been carefully designed for international participants. All 35+ venues are concentrated in walkable areas of London to minimize travel time, and special visa support services are being arranged for Asian and American participants. The program runs Monday through Saturday for convenient weekend arrivals and departures, and delegation packages including flights and accommodation are available through partnerships with major airlines.

SXSW London also plans to secure dedicated spaces and programming for regional delegations through partnerships with key Asian institutions such as the Korea Creative Content Agency, Japan Digital Content Association, and Singapore's Infocomm Media Development Authority. Global companies like Sony, Samsung, Apple, and Meta are expected to serve as bridges connecting various creative ecosystems.

With a ten-year license secured, SXSW London has a long-term vision. Sam shared, "Creative innovation is increasingly distributed globally. In entertainment, Seoul is as important as Los Angeles; in fashion, Tokyo is as influential as New York; and London sits at the intersection of these creative flows. We're building infrastructure for collaboration that transcends borders."

As SXSW London prepares for its inaugural event, it is expected to establish itself not just as a European festival but as a global hub where creative talents from Asia, America, and Europe can find new connections and collaborative opportunities.
